With 400 meters in length (length) and 61.5 meters in width (width), the vessel has the capacity to transport up to 1,500 “containers”

The container ship MSC GÜLSÜN, considered the largest in the world and with the capacity to transport up to 23,000 packages, was recently registered in the registry of ships of Panama, authorities of the Central American country said Sunday.

With 400 meters in length (length) and 61.5 meters in width (width), the ship has the capacity to transport up to 1,500 containers more than the traditional container vessels and reaches a speed of up to 25.1 knots, explained the Maritime Authority of Panama (AMP).

The ship, recently built at the Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries, is owned by the Italian company MSC, which is the second largest container transport company in the world and operates a fleet of more than 519 ships.

The MSC GÜLSÜN, which is the first of eleven ships that the Italian firm has ordered from the Korean shipyard, will make its first trip starting Monday from the port of Xingang (China) to northern Europe, the institution added.

“Our focus for this five-year period is to give priority to innovation and modernization. With this new acquisition, we can say that we are taking firm steps towards a comprehensive restructuring, with a view to continue expanding,” the new director of the AMP said in the same statement. , Noriel Araúz.

The merchant marine of Panama, the largest in the world, accounted for 18% of the world fleet in 2016 and registered a total of 8,094 vessels and 226.6 million tons. Panama is followed by Liberia and the Marshall Islands, according to the AMP.

The registry, which was born in 1925 and has been leading the market since the 1990s, reports direct or indirect revenues of between 125 and 150 million dollars a year to the public treasury.

It is an open registry, which means that it does not require the owners of the ships to have Panamanian nationality or residence and does not impose any age restrictions on the vessel or tonnage.
